Our Mission Statement: 

 

The mission of Harborview Elementary School is to promote the academic and social growth of all students, acknowledging and supporting our diverse population. 

Our School Services:


Special Education programs are provided to students who have been identified by the Child Intervention Team (CIT) as needing specialized instruction as noted by their Individual Educational Plans (IEP). Collaboration time in the form of weekly planning meetings between classroom teachers and special education teachers ensures that differentiated instruction occurs in the regular classrooms.

The Literacy Leader coordinates the delivery of services to students needing supplemental reading instruction and provides small group reading instruction for targeted students. The literacy leader manages resources for literacy instruction and assessment. Literacy leaders support classroom teachers to implement effective instructional practices in literacy education.

ELL/ESL (English Language Learners/English as a Second Language) is a program where the ELL teacher provides an instructional approach to make academic instruction in English understandable to English language learners, and also to help them acquire proficiency in English while at the same time achieving in content areas.

Extended Learning is flexible, pullout services that provide for intermediate students, grades three through five. The EL teacher provides the Talent Development and Search (TaDS) program through weekly in-class lessons for all students in grades kindergarten through grade two.

BASE is an acronym for Behavioral and Academic Success in Education. This is a Juneau Youth Services program that provides support for students who are struggling with emotional and social issues that interfere with their learning. Support is provided through in-school and after-school academic support, family counseling, activities during school breaks and other activities.

Discovery Southeast, and Artist in the Schools are two programs receiving grant funding that offer instruction to augment the existing curricula provided by the classroom teachers.

Big Brothers/Big Sisters provides Reading Mentors who build a supportive relationship with students while helping them with reading instruction.

Coast Guard Tutors volunteer to come in on a regular basis to help students with their class work or homework.
