Positive Behavior Intervention Support (P.B.I.S.)
Positive Behavior Intervention Support is a process that we are beginning to examine and implement at Harborview Elementary School. We have linked with Student Services and are working with Dr. Greg Benner to provide training for teachers and paras in working with students to develop a plan specifically devoted to positive interventions.
As you might know, schools deal with as many behaviors as there are students; hence it becomes important that we have a well thought out plan in place that addresses as many positive interventions as possible. When P.B.I.S. is used effectively, everyone stands to gain.
In October, Dr. Benner held training for certified staff at Harborview on school-wide positive behavior supports. We are bringing him back to do similar training for our para staff and also will try to hold an evening session with interested parents. We’ll keep parents posted about when that will occur.
P.B.I.S. helps schools to implement school-wide positive behavior supports. Students also become involved in the process and have ownership. Teachers and students come together to develop classroom behavior norms as well as school wide behavior norms. Together they address behavior approaches that bring out attributes like respect, safety, and responsibility.
As we develop our behavior norms, we’ll post them, that way you will be informed and can help support our model.
