Ms. Edwards - 2nd and 3rd Grade

Welcome to 2nd Grade, Room 218!

About the Teachers - Mrs. Eckland

It is a pleasure to teach in such a beautiful place and wonderful school. I have taught all grades Kindergarten through 4th grade during my twenty-one year career, with the last thirteen years at Harborview Elementary School. My husband and I have two teenage children, Warren and Chantel. I really enjoy teaching a 2nd/3rd grade loop. I strive to provide an atmosphere that fosters children’s natural curiosity, and facilitates academic and social growth.

Arrival/Dismissal

School begins at 8:00 AM and ends at 2:30 PM. Students who are eating the school breakfast will be allowed in the building at 7:40 AM.  All other students will be allowed in at 7:55 AM. Students arriving before that time need to wait in front of Harborview at the main entrance, or arrangements can be made with the RALLY program.

Snacks

Our class will have a mid-morning snack each day.  Students need to bring their own snack.  Snacks should be simple and nutritious (fruits, vegetables, cheese, yogurt, etc.).  Snacks with sugar will not be allowed. Please send in extra non-perishable snacks that can be stored and given to students who do not have a snack or forget to bring one.

Lunch

Our class will eat lunch from 11:25 to 11:45 and then go outside for a short recess. The school district offers a “HOT” lunch. Free and reduced price lunches are available for those who qualify; however, you must reapply each year by filling out the paperwork. It does not carry over from year to year. Contact the school office for more information, or to get forms.  You are welcome to come and eat with your child on any day.

Gym Shoes

Each child needs gym shoes with non-marking soles.  Gym shoes are to be left at school.  Our class has P.E. on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1:50 to 2:30 PM.  Your child needs to dress appropriately for gym class on gym days.

Recess

Students will go out everyday except in extreme weather conditions. There is a 15-minute recess in the morning, afternoon and immediately after lunch. Please have your child wear appropriate outdoor gear.

Weekly Newsletters

I send home a newsletter on Mondays.  The newsletter is to let you know about upcoming important dates and events as well as to keep you abreast of what the students are doing in the classroom.  Please take time to read the newsletter each week.

Homework

Students will be bringing home a homework packet on Mondays containing a reading log, spelling words for the week, and math. Students need to return the completed homework in the folder on Fridays. I will begin homework in a few of weeks.

Research notes a significant connection between reading for fifteen minutes or more a night at home and school success.  Through my experience as a teacher I have made the same observation.  Therefore, your child will be asked to read for 20 minutes every night and record the title of the book(s) read. At the beginning of the year part of the 20 minutes may include an adult reading to the child, depending on your child’s ability to read. However, it is important that your child does some reading each night and the expectation is that your child will be doing at least 20 min. of reading to others by the last half of the year. Students will be encouraged to bring home some books from school to read to you.  I would also like to encourage you to read to your child on a regular basis. It is still important at this age no matter how proficient at reading your child is. Feel free to ask me for book suggestions.  Students may bring classroom books home for personal or family reading anytime.

Volunteers

Students benefit greatly from volunteers. Parents are encouraged to help with field trips and class projects as well as helping in the classroom on a regular basis. Please let me know if you would like to volunteer.

Visiting School

I have an open door policy and parents are welcome to come into the classroom anytime any day. You must sign-in at the office anytime you come into the school.
