Homework
The purpose of homework is to give students extra practice on the skills learned during class time. There's no denying that the more you practice something the better you get at it. I also believe it's important for parents to see what their children are learning in school. On average homework will take 45 minutes on a nightly basis Monday through Thursday.
Reading: Monday through Thursday, students should read independently for 20+ minutes anything of your choice. Students will record in their reading in a Reading Log, which needs to be turned in on Friday.
Math: Practice problems related to class work will be given on a regular basis.
Word Study: Words Their Way is a spelling program in which students practice specific letter combinations (based on an assessment of their spelling) through a variety of sorting and writing activities. During the first few weeks of school, students will become familiar with the spelling routine and then they will take on the work independently at home. The Word Study notebook will travel back and forth each night.
Social Studies/Science/Writing: Assigned as needed, throughout the year.
I expect students to do their best job on each homework assignment and that it will be handwritten neatly. Homework must be completely finished before school begins on the due date. Students who do not turn in homework will need to complete it during recess.
Please take a moment to review your child’s nightly work with them and allow them to correct any mistakes. If there is a legitimate reason why a student is unable to complete the assignment, please send a note to me on the date the homework is due or send an email stating the reason that it was not completed.
