Dear Parents of Extended Learning students and guests,
Just a quick note to introduce myself to you and share some ideas about the year’s potential classroom activities. My name is April Hoy and I am your new E.L. teacher here at Harborview Elementary. I am a recent transplant from Santa Fe, New Mexico as of this summer. It has been quite an adjustment to move from the high mountain desert to the rainforest environment of Southeast Alaska, but I am excited about the learning process for all my students and myself.
My experience as an educator has been varied and enriching professionally as well as personally. My background in education consists of being a General Education Teacher in classrooms for K-1, a Special Education Teacher for K-8, and most recently as a Teacher for the Gifted and Talented, K-8. Overall I carry 10+ years of teaching and learning experience in the public schools system. I am currently dually licensed as a Level 3 Pre-K through 12 Special Education and Level 3 K-8 Elementary Instructional Leader through the State of New Mexico. As part of my professional development here in Alaska I have been and will continue to be taking Educational courses related to the licensing process here. This continuing educational experience is in addition to my BA in Elementary Education, BA in Special Education, and MS in Science Teaching.
It is my hope that by way of introduction, and sharing some of my personal educational achievements, that you will become comfortable and know that you entrusting your learners to me will be fun and rewarding for all of us.
As this is a new district and classroom for me I expect there will be a time of transition for all of us to get to know one another. It is my firm belief and approach to teaching that we all have some special talent, knowledge, or experience that allows us to teach and enrich each other. Through out the year I will be actively seeking to grow and develop all my student’s abilities in the classroom and through outdoor experiences and activities where we can share and learn together. As part of that I will be openly inviting parents, teachers, students, and community partners to help develop and participate in this learning community. It is my hope that as we interact in the educational setting we will also be developing our community and regional influence as well.
For returning students, welcome back. To new students, welcome aboard. I am looking forward to providing a fun and exciting interactive learning experience. To Parents, please feel free to contact me via email or my classroom phone as listed below.
